Musings from BuKwanJangNim
Congratulations to everyone who tested! Seung Sae Audrey, BuKyosa Adrian and BuKyosa Sophia, your tests were outstanding! You modeled testing being a demonstration of your learning, mastery and growth. Your process, consistency in training, application of feedback, and growth over time were on full display. Well done! As we explore this testing cycle, are you learning with the sole goal of testing? Or is testing a reflection of your work over time, mastery of material, and the outcome of proper training. There’s a difference.

Testing News
It’s never to soon to put belt promotion testing on your calendars. Our next test is Saturday, July 19. Please figure testing in with your summer plans.
Protocol Focus
This month’s focus is on receiving feedback with an open, learner’s mind. This means you say “thank you” or “yes ma’am/sir” and mean it as you process the information, you don’t apologize for having made an error, and you do not explain why you were doing something a different way. Learning is frequently about being in an uncomfortable space that may involve struggles or frustration. It is okay to be in that space.
Tuition
Tuition is due by Sunday, April 20 for May training. Thank you for remembering the tuition total of $110.00 including tax and for being on time. There is a $10 late fee for tuition received after the 20th. If you are not a TRC member, please set up AutoPay through your bank – it is quick and easy to do! Please ask BuKwanJangNim Marie if you need more information.
New Students
We are looking to add new students to our Tiny Tigers, Kicking Kids and Adult classes. Who do you know that that would benefit from our training? Please send them our way, word of mouth is a powerful recruiting tool!

Thoughts on Learning
What does it mean to truly learn something? How do we know when we’ve ‘got’ it? What does it look like and feel like to have learned something? We all learn differently, but there are commonalities to the learning process. Learning takes time. Learning takes effort and repetition. Learning takes passion or at least interest, desire and will. Learning sometimes takes failing and continuing to try. Learning requires being open to teaching and feedback. Learning may require dropping perceptions of what we ‘know’ and trying something a new way. Sometimes it just takes showing up and doing it. Some learning is ‘easy’, some learning is ‘hard’; all learning takes time. If you don’t practice, your previous learning is forgotten.
How engaged are you in the learning process when you come to class? How committed are you to building the repetition needed to truly learn a technique, a form, a kick or any of the other skills that we train? Are you willing to keep working on it even when you think you’ve ‘got it’? Can you sustain your focus when maybe it would be more interesting to pause and look around to see what everyone else is doing? Does learning always require something to be ‘new’ or can you take the ‘old’ and make it new? Is coming to class and learning only about testing and promoting or is it deeper than that? How can you challenge yourself to always be a learner - regardless of rank, ability, or technique? That is a true martial artist.
