Student Newsletter for THE DOJANG
(Adult School)

September 2025

Musings from BuKwanJangNim
I am really excited by the energy, focus and commitment to training that I have been seeing over the past few weeks in particular.  It is always there because we have fabulous, hardworking students, and for whatever reason, it has ‘upped’ a notch lately.  I would love to add some more adult students to our school, it is a great time to grow a little bit.  We rely on word of mouth for the most part, and you all are our best advertising.  I see the impact that TKD training has on you through your growth over time in fitness, movement, technique,  kinesthetic awareness, confidence, mindfulness, breath control, handling nerves, leadership, and more.  Your progress on your journey and my ability to foster it and help you to grow is my favorite thing about teaching!

Reminders/News

Volunteer for Tiny Tigers and Kicking Kids
Students red belt and above, have you signed up for classes to support this month?  Please reference the email that you should have received August 19 for details.  We need you and we really appreciate your help!

Please Welcome

Lilly R. - new white belt

Breaking Class
Breaking class is Saturday, September 13.  All students will work on impact techniques, holding and setting up effective breaks. Last breaking class was excellent! Students who break for testing should be building their testing break.  Boards are $5 each (I delayed as long as I could) or you are welcome to bring your own.

Dojang Dinner
This month’s Dojang dinner is Saturday, September 13 following breaking class.  Plan to join us at Beyond Bread on Campbell.  Bring your family, friends and yourself!

Testing News

Our next belt promotion testing is scheduled for November 15 at 3:30pm.  Kids' testing is Sunday, November 16 at 3:30pm.

Combo Class
Combo class this month is on Sunday, September 21.  Plan to come and blend our community for a fabulous class!Class is from 3:00-3:50pm.

Black Belt Workshop
Black Belt Workshop will follow Combo Class on September 21 from 3:50 - 4:30pm.  Black Belts are expected to attend, and hopefully the mothers in your life will understand.  If you cannot attend for some reason, clear it with BuKwanJangNim before September 21.

Protocol Focus
Our protocol focus this month is to continue modeling appropriate Dojang behaviors. We learn by what we see and hear, in addition to what is explicitly taught.  Some examples are using ‘yes’ and ‘Yes ma’am/sir’, appropriate posture (standing up straight, hands by sides), bowing in and out of drills, bowing at the threshold when entering and exiting, turning away (clockwise) to adjust uniforms and belts, helping with tying belts etc.  There’s a LOT to learn and everyone can brush up on protocols.

Tuition
Tuition is due by Saturday, September 20 for October training. Thank you for remembering the tuition total of $110.00 including tax and for being on time. There is a $10 late fee for tuition received after the 20th.  If you are not a TRC member, please set up AutoPay through your bank – it is quick and easy to do!  Please ask BuKwanJangNim Marie if you need more information.

New Students
We are looking to add new students to our Tiny Tigers, Kicking Kids and Adult classes.  Who do you know that that would benefit from our training? Please send them our way, word of mouth is a powerful recruiting tool!

History
Pyung Ahn Form 4 (performed at purple and 4th red belt) 31 moves.  This form is originally a Tang Soo Do form of Chinese origin created in the 1870s.  Many traditional Chinese forms originate from the study of animals and how they move and defend from attack.  The animal represented in this form is the turtle for its peace and confidence as well as its deliberate actions.  Pyung Ahn is represented by Chinese characters showing calm, peace and balance (Pyung) and comfort, security and confidence (Ahn). The Pyung Ahn forms are about balancing the mental and the physical and finding peace.

Words of Wisdom
“Martial arts are not something you can just learn. The starting point is your own effort and endurance, and if you do not realize this, no matter how many years you train and what grade you reach, you will lack the valuable perceptions of a martial artist.  Without this self-awareness even 10th Dans are equivalent to people without Dan.”                            Masaaki Hatsumi
